The Final Edition of the ICP

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities:

It is with both joy and sadness that I am writing to announce the final edition of the ICP. After you receive this notice, I will delete the mailing list for the ICP from my files and you will no longer receive announcements about the project. I was placed on a new drug regimen about 2 months ago and have experienced a serious side effect to the new meds. I am no longer able to continue to maintain the project as a result.

Please know that it has been a joy to bring you the ICP for the past 2 years and that I wish I could continue the project into the future. However, my focus has to be on my own healing now. For those of you who have contributed or hosted the ICP, my heartfelt gratitude can hardly be expressed. For those who blog about HIV/AIDS and who fight to end the stigma of this disease, I urge you to continue your work. We are all in the fight of our lives.

Many, many thanks to Sokari at Blacklooks for hosting the final edition of the ICP at the following link:

http://www.blacklooks.org/2008/06/international_carnival_of_positives_-_final_edition.html

Please visit, read and leave your feedback for the host and the contributors in this, the last edition of the ICP.

I wish you all peace and health.

Much love.
ICP 2.9 now available at Creampuff Revolution

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP):

It is a tremendous pleasure to announce the publication of edition 2.9 of the ICP at the following link:

http://rosemaryrowe.typepad.com/creampuff_revolution/2008/03/creampuff-welco.html

Creampuff, a.k.a., Roro, who hails from Vancouver, is our first repeat host from Canada. I encourage you to bookmark this edition and visit it over time so that you can enjoy each of the contributions from the world of HIV/AIDS. I hope that you will also join me in thanking Roro for her work this month. We “met” about 2 years ago during the NHL Hockey Championship between Edmonton and the Carolina Hurricanes and have been fast friends since despite some rather competitive invocation of mojo to make our teams win the Stanley Cup. Roro’s sense of compassion combined with her sense of humor makes me quite happy to count her among my friends.

This 21st consecutive edition of the ICP features personal accounts, video, a special musical contribution from UK band Slovo, self-help information and the latest in news from the HIV/AIDS community. I hope that you will spend some time reading and that you will leave comments for the contributors. It is through your comments that we can hone our messages and learn how you feel about our work. Please feel free to leave your thoughts with each of the contributors and for our gracious host.

Next Edition

Please visit the ICP homepage to learn more about this project and how you can contribute here:

http://www.internationalcarnivalofpozitivities.blogspot.com .

We are now accepting submissions for edition 2.10 to be hosted here, at Mshairi:

http://www.mshairi.com/blog

This will be Mshairi’s first stint as host of the ICP although she has been a frequent contributor in the past. Mshairi’s edition will mark the first time that the ICP will have been hosted by an African host. If you like poetry, you should scroll through her blog. A selection of her poetry also appears at one of my favorite sites, The Other Voices Poetry International Project, an anthology of poetry from around the world that has been recognized by UNESCO, here:

http://www.othervoicespoetry.org

Mshairi's work appears under the title “Footprints” here:

http://othervoicespoetry.org/vol27/mshairi/index.html .

Contribute Your Work

Please join the growing community of contributors and hosts for this important international forum for genuine voices of AIDS. If you are interested in hosting the ICP, please email me at ron.hudson@verizon.net with the subject listed as “Volunteering to Host the ICP” and I will make the process for you as fun and rewarding as possible. We urgently need new volunteer hosts for the ICP editions after April, 2008. I will work with you to make the process as painless as it can be whether you are a first-time or returning host.

Please Share with Your Friends

Please share this notice with your friends and consider posting announcements of our link on your blogs and websites. Our continuing presence is bolstered by your participation and outreach. Please help spread the word.

To be Removed From or Added To the ICP mailing list:

Please email me at ron.hudson@verizon.net to be added to or removed from the ICP mailing list. Please include the word subscribe or unsubscribe in your subject line to indicate your intent. I will use your source email address as indicated in your note. If you did not receive notice of the ICP from me via direct email, then I do not have your email address in the mailing list. Please note that I can not remove an email address that does not exist on the mailing list. Your privacy is absolutely critical and no email addresses will be shared, sold or given to any other source. I use blind-copy distribution technology to prevent your identity from being revealed.

I am looking for any great ideas from folks. So if ya know of anything happening that is neat, kooky, or not to be missed let me know. I hope to see a few of you along the way. I plan on hittining Minneapolis, Brooklyn, Asheville, Nashvegas, Eugene Olympia, Los Angeles and more along the way. If you need to get away for a bit and need a ride lemme know.

There will be a blog and pics on myspace when we get closer to headin out and for the duration. Looking at june 1st-ish to start.

Anti-HRC action in NYC 2/23 (x-posted)

From my friends in NYC:

Join the RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA to protest the Human Rights Campaign's
betrayal of the Trans community at HRC's annual gala fundraiser.

When: Saturday, Feb. 23 at 5:30pm.
Where: Outside the Hilton Hotel (6th Ave. and 53rd St.)
Bring: Attitude! Drums! Flamboyant threads!

Why protest HRC?

Instead of supporting a united queer community, HRC dumped transgender
people from ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a bill banning
discrimination based on sexual orientation, but not gender identity.
Publically, HRC executive director Joe Solmonese said, "We absolutely do
not support and, in fact, oppose legislation that is not absolutely
inclusive." But behind the scenes, he worked to eliminate trans
protections.

ENDA passed in the House and went on to fail in the Senate. Yet HRC
continues to hail the bill as a “victory." But the real victory is that
360 LGBTQ groups opposed the HRC and told them they can't turn some of us
into second-class citizens so others can get ahead. The real victory is
that, from Stonewall to Seattle, trans folks have battled on the
frontlines for a better world.

HRC's betrayal of trans people is just the tip of an oil-slicked iceberg.
With their funding from Shell, their alliance with Log Cabin Republicans,
and their push to stockpile the military with queer fodder for Bush's
crusade, HRC makes it increasingly clear what they spend their $30 million
budget ..ing Right-wingers Cope.

CAN'T SPELL LGBT WITH HRC!

check out our spoofed HRC logo here:
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2008/02/94808.html

Movie about Darby Crash and the Germs

There is a movie about Darby Crash and the 80s LA punk band the Germs called "What We Do Is Secret", that premiered this Summer. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have been released/distributed any where else yet. I live in Portland Oregon and I am getting really impatient to see it. Has any one here seen it yet? Is it any good? (the reviews have been great, and there is a magazine with Shane West and the surviving original members of the Germs on the cover) But the question I'm most interested in is: have they toned down Darby's queerness in the movie? The trailer/preview shows a quick scene in which Darby is staring at a sleeping Rob Henley, who was alleged to be Darby's lover before he killed himself. Any body have any info on the movie? At all?

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP):

The 16th edition of the ICP is now available at:

http://ogresview.mu.nu/archives/243135.php.

This edition represents an attempt to reach out to a conservative political community about HIV/AIDS. It is my hope that our messages might encourage those who normally do not come in contact with the issues of HIV/AIDS to think about how to help us fight the pandemic. We have poetry, video, personal accounts and news from around the world.

Next Edition

Please Share with Your Friends

As usual, I would like to ask you to post a permanent link to the ICP homepage (you can get a widget there as well) on your blogs or websites and to share the word of this edition with your readers and friends. The more people who know about the ICP, the more likely it will be that we will continue to receive excellent contributions. In fact, feel free to nominate your own HIV/AIDS related contributions from your favorite blogs or websites. The most powerful stories are those of personal nature, so I would encourage you to seek out or write personal accounts and to share them with the ICP. There are many more of you than of me, so join me in the search for quality blogs that share personal stories about HIV/AIDS from around the world. We have hardly begun to tap into the situation in Asia, so blogs from that region of the world are particularly welcome.

Seeking queer triads for research!

My name is Sunny. I am a graduate student in the Sexuality Studies program at San Francisco State University. I am conducting research on polyamory. The aim of my study is to explore how individuals in queer polyamorous triads discuss love in their relationships. I am in search of individuals in queer, long-term (one year or longer), polyamorous triads to interview. Individuals must identify themselves and their relationships as queer, and the triads must be three people who are all sexually and romantically involved with one another.

Participating in this study will entail a 45-90 minute one-on-one interview at a comfortable and private location convenient for both of us to discuss your experiences and feelings of love while in a triad.

If you are currently in a queer, long-term (one year or longer), triad relationship and are interested in participating in the study, please contact me!

smnordmarken@yahoo.com
(415) 516-0908

I am currently seeking people to interview! Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to participate.

Thank you!

ICP 15 is now available at Living Mindfully with HIV

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP):

The 15th edition of the ICP is now available at the following link:

http://hivhsnmindfulness.blogspot.com:80/2007/08/15th-edition-of-international-carnival.html

on the blog Living Mindfully with HIV. This edition includes a return of artwork from Colombian artist Farid de la Ossa, a video from Angelique Kidjo and Joss Stone for relief for Darfur, a special gift offer from me for your contribution to an AIDS Charity of your choice, HIV/AIDS news from around the world, more addiction recovery help, a very special introduction to "Big Love" or "Arohanui", and much more. Please take a few moments to read and leave comments, particularly for your host, James Wortz, who has done yet another great job despite a bout of bad health in the last few days.

Next Edition

Please visit the ICP homepage ( http://internationalcarnivalofpozitivities.blogspot.com ) to learn more about this project and how you can contribute. We are now accepting submissions for edition 16 to be hosted at Ogre's Politics and Views ( http://www.ogresview.mu.nu ). Please consider contributing your original artwork, poetry, news, personal accounts, short stories, videos or music files for the next edition. This next edition is very special. I have approached the host, Mr. Ogre, to participate as an outreach to a conservative political community that normally may not hear from people living with HIV/AIDS. Please consider this an opportunity to share your stories with a group of people who may not normally think of HIV/AIDS as often as we do and how you might make your case for teamwork with people who may not necessarily agree with you.

Contribute Your Work

I hope that you will join the growing community of contributors and hosts for this important international forum for genuine voices of AIDS. If you are interested in hosting the ICP, please email me and I will make the process for you as painless as possible. Return hosts are welcome!

To be Removed From or Added To the ICP mailing list:

Please send me an email (ron.hudson@verizon.net) with the word REMOVE or SUBSCRIBE in your subject line to have your name removed or added to the ICP mailing list.

Peace to you and yours.

Need some Help...

Hey Punk Bros,

As you may (or may not) know, I am new to San Francisco after a very bad breakup of a LTR. I've been trying to make a new life for myself here and (most crucially) find a job and my own place (or regular roommate situation). Originally, I had a window that would've taken me to the first of November in order to achieve these first steps to start getting my feet back on the ground. Unfortunately, things have changed for my host and I now have to be out of here by September 20th.

While I've had a number of leads and some interviews, I've not been able to secure a position as yet, and from where I'm standing, I'm approaching something of a breaking point, my brothers! So I HAVE TWO REQUESTS I'd ask you to consider:

* first, I NEED A JOB!! I absolutely WELCOME hard work - physical or otherwise - and have NO PROBLEM "starting at the bottom" to earn my living. I have background in Garden Landscaping, in Animal Care and Management, in Text Writing, Creative Content, and Editing, as well as Customer Service and Corporate Administrative Management (and a musician my whole life). While my first choice is to remain here in the Bay Area, at this juncture, I'm not going to disregard any potential options which come my way.

I'm enthusiastic about the possibility of working for a PUNK or DEATH METAL BAND; either as some sort of roadie (driver / crew / whatever) or by using my professional writing and management skills to assist in enhancing the public face of the band, etc. Particularly if such a position would entail travel, I'm open to and enthusiastic about any such requirement. So if you are in a punk/metal/death metal band or have connections to one which might be able to hire someone like me to work hard for them, PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP!

Same thing for GAY PORN COMPANIES - if you have any job openings at all, PLEASE CONTACT ME!

I'm noting my email address here - PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you have any concrete leads I can pursue - Thank You... (jef13bc@yahoo.com)

* The second request is that, after September 20th (somewhat obviously), I NEED A PLACE TO STAY. All I need is a roof over my head - I can sleep on the floor in an out-of-the-way corner (I do have my own airbed too), or a couch or in a basement or back room, etc. I do HAVE MY OWN FOOD money, so I won't interfere with your food supply (nor would I want to as I'm on a fairly strict diet). I also HAVE MY OWN WIRELESS INTERNET SETUP, so I wouldn't be imposing on anyone's computer time, etc. I also get outdoors as much as possible, mostly on my bicycle.

But like any of us, in order to have a real shot at putting my life back together, I need a base of operations as well as the ability to remain as physically healthy as possible.

I do realize this is a big leap; to hope that a brother who most likely would be a "stranger" in all other respects, would open his home to a man in my current situation - I've actually done it myself in the past, so I know! However, I CAN GIVE REFERENCES to my character, my honesty, and my efforts to improve my state; keeping any such stay to an absolute minimum.

I can't THANK YOU enough, my brothers, for considering helping me in this crucial moment. I will do whatever I can and/or need to in order to accommodate any parameters you might need to have addressed, etc.

Thanks much for checking this out; I look forward to speaking with you.

Jef

The Devolution of Gay Punk

Maybe it's just in NYC, I don't know, but it seems like lately all the gay punk people I run into have reduced themselves to the level of braindead Chelsea queens. All they seem to care about these days is sex. I hate to sound like I'm really uptight, but I just really miss the days when punks had more creative and subversive things to do than get laid.

Hi everyone.

As a gay blogger and a 22 year survivor of HIV/AIDS, I started a blog carnival for people living with HIV/AIDS and their allies. The homepage of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP) can be found at:

www.internationalcarnivalofpozitivities.blogspot.com

This is a forum to share artwork, music, video, poetry, short stories and personal accounts about living with HIV/AIDS, the struggle to end the stigma of HIV/AIDS and how allies help the HIV/AIDS community.

Please check out the homepage at the link above and you will find links for the first 13 editions. Our next edition will be posted by 10 August at Straight, Not Narrow at:

www.straightnotnarrow.blogspot.com

We accept pertinent submissions for each edition until the 2nd of each month at midnight New York time and publish each month by the 10th at midnight.

Please have a look. If you like what you see, please share the link with your friends.

Peace to one and all.

Safe Journeys!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Activism is about no compromise. Politics is all about compromise."
Bayard Rustin

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

When I heard the quote by Bayard Rustin I felt that he was not being judgmental.
He was relating his experience in the civil rights movement as well as
his life inside the political realm.

Of the candidates I see presently running,
I see John Edwards running for the
Chief Executive job
and Barak Obama or Ms Clinton as Vice President.

My reasons have little to do with what I personally want.
It is based on my understanding of human nature.

If Barak or Hillery are vice president that gives the American population 4 to 8 years to get used to seeing a women and a man of African Decent in a position of power. The uncertainty and just plain old fear would be eroded down through experience
by the time there turn at bat came up in 2016.

I find Hillary to be uninspiring when she speaks but her time on the Armed Services committee was well spent. SHo knows what the military is and is not capable of doing well. Also she would be a familiar face to other political leaders of other nations.

Barak has experience in activism and politics. He may have a better understanding between compromising and being compromised.
Also, an African American face would send a substantial signal to the world
about where the United States is going. It could give the new president a honeymoon
period of up to six months!!!!

There is a lot of disappointment in folks who voted for George W. Bush, (Twice!) but even though they do not see him as being a good president they still support him.
Why? ; Human nature.
I think that is a topic for another thread though. So let us not "go there" yet.

John Edwards is the only candidate being attacked for helping the poor.
I think that's a good sign.
The Noise Machine has stooped to talking about how expensive his haircuts have been.
Why his hair? Because it is all they have.
The arguments have been “He has money and dares to speak out about poverty in the U.S.A. What a hypocrite!”

If that’s all they have to throw out at him, he has a shot.

Yeah, weird, isn't it?!
Considered by some the "Holy Grail" of Punk Rock,
these Rastacore boys have just released an all-original-line-up.
Aaand, it's produced by BEASTIE BOYS' Adam Yauch.

REVOLVER, thee heavy metal magazine, voted it
FIVE STARS! What is UP with that?

A scene that once antagonised Punx for BEIN' Punk,
metallers now regard BAD BRAINS with renewed interest
and look to them for inspiration. Comments?

A friend of mine has had a book published, "New Brunswick, New Jersey, Good Bye; Bands Dirty Basements and the Search for Self."
It's about his coming of age in the New Jersey Punk scene. He published a zine, was involved with a punk collective, put out a couple of seven inches, was in a couple of bands,
and put on shows.

He met different kinds of folks and learned that all skinheads are not nazies otr even hetrosexual.

It's a good read and I was wondering;

1. What is it that you got out of the Punk scene?

and

2. What have you contributed to it?

P.S.
Here's the link to the label that's putting it out.

Lesbians sentenced for self-defense. FREE THEM NOW!

FREE THEM NOW!
Lesbians sentenced for self-defense
All-white jury convicts Black women

By Imani Henry
New York

Published Jun 21, 2007 2:58 AM
On June 14, four African-American women—Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24)—received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them—all because they are lesbians.

The mere fact that any victim of a bigoted attack would be arrested, jailed and then convicted for self-defense is an outrage. But the length of prison time given further demonstrates the highly political nature of this case and just how racist, misogynistic, anti-gay, anti-youth and anti-worker the so-called U.S. justice system truly is.

The description of the events, reported below, is based on written statements by a community organization (FIERCE) that has made a call to action to defend the four women, verbal accounts from court observers and evidence from a surveillance camera.

The attack

On Aug. 16, 2006, seven young, African-American, lesbian-identified friends were walking in the West Village. The Village is a historic center for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) communities, and is seen as a safe haven for working-class LGBT youth, especially youth of color.

As they passed the Independent Film Cinema, 29-year-old Dwayne Buckle, an African-American vendor selling DVDs, sexually propositioned one of the women. They rebuffed his advances and kept walking.

“I’ll f— you straight, sweetheart!” Buckle shouted. A video camera from a nearby store shows the women walking away. He followed them, all the while hurling anti-lesbian slurs, grabbing his genitals and making explicitly obscene remarks. The women finally stopped and confronted him. A heated argument ensued. Buckle spat in the face of one of the women and threw his lit cigarette at them, escalating the verbal attack into a physical one.

Buckle is seen on the video grabbing and pulling out large patches of hair from one of the young women. When Buckle ended up on top of one of the women, choking her, Johnson pulled a small steak knife out of her purse. She aimed for his arm to stop him from killing her friend.

The video captures two men finally running over to help the women and beating Buckle. At some point he was stabbed in the abdomen. The women were already walking away across the street by the time the police arrived.

Buckle was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. When asked at the hospital, he responded at least twice that men had attacked him.

There was no evidence that Johnson’s kitchen knife was the weapon that penetrated his abdomen, nor was there any blood visible on it. In fact, there was never any forensics testing done on her knife. On the night they were arrested, the police told the women that there would be a search by the New York Police Department for the two men—which to date has not happened.

After almost a year of trial, four of the seven were convicted in April. Johnson was sentenced to 11 years on June 14.

Even with Buckle’s admission and the video footage proving that he instigated this anti-gay attack, the women were relentlessly demonized in the press, had trumped-up felony charges levied against them, and were subsequently given long sentences in order to send a clear resounding message—that self-defense is a crime and no one should dare to fight back.

Political backdrop of the case

Why were these young women used as an example? At stake are the billions of dollars in tourism and real estate development involved in the continued gentrification of the West Village. This particular incident happened near the Washington Square area—home of New York University, one of most expensive private colleges in the country and one of the biggest employers and landlords in New York City. The New York Times reported that Justice Edward J. McLaughlin used his sentencing speech to comment on “how New York welcomes tourists.” (June 17)

The Village is also the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, the three-day street battle against the NYPD that, along with the Compton Cafeteria “Riots” in California, helped launch the modern-day LGBT liberation movement in 1969. The Manhattan LGBT Pride march, one of the biggest demonstrations of LGBT peoples in the world, ends near the Christopher Street Piers in the Village, which have been the historical “hangout” and home for working-class trans and LGBT youth in New York City for decades.

Because of growing gentrification in recent years, young people of color, homeless and transgender communities, LGBT and straight, have faced curfews and brutality by police sanctioned by the West Village community board and politicians. On Oct. 31, 2006, police officers from the NYPD’s 6th Precinct indiscriminately beat and arrested several people of color in sweeps on Christopher Street after the Halloween parade.

Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in anti-LGBT violence in the area, with bashers going there with that purpose in mind.

For trans people and LGBT youth of color, who statistically experience higher amounts of bigoted violence, the impact of the gentrification has been severe. As their once-safe haven is encroached on by real estate developers, the new white and majority heterosexual residents of the West Village then call in the state to brutalize them.

For the last six years the political LGBT youth group FIERCE has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people “to counter the displacement and criminalization of LGBTSTQ [lesbian, gay, bi, two spirit, trans, and queer] youth of color and homeless youth at the Christopher Street Pier and in Manhattan’s West Village.” (www.fiercenyc.org) FIERCE has also been the lead organization supporting the Jersey Seven and their families.

The trial and the media

Deemed a so-called “hate crime” against a straight man, every possible racist, anti-woman, anti-LGBT and anti-youth tactic was used by the entire state apparatus and media. Everything from the fact that they lived outside of New York, in the working-class majority Black city of Newark, N.J., to their gender expressions and body structures were twisted and dehumanized in the public eye and to the jury.

According to court observers, McLaughlin stated throughout the trial that he had no sympathy for these women. The jury, although they were all women, were all white. All witnesses for the district attorney were white men, except for one Black male who had several felony charges.

Court observers report that the defense attorneys had to put enormous effort into simply convincing the jury that they were “average women” who had planned to just hang out together that night. Some jurists asked why they were in the Village if they were from New Jersey. The DA brought up whether they could afford to hang out there—raising the issue of who has the right to be there in the first place.

The Daily News reporting was relentless in its racist anti-lesbian misogyny, portraying Buckle as a “filmmaker” and “sound engineer” preyed upon by a “lesbian wolf pack” (April 19) and a “gang of angry lesbians.” (April 13)

Everyone has been socialized by cultural archetypes of what it means to be a “man” or “masculine” and “woman” or “feminine.” Gender identity/expression is the way each indivdual chooses or not to express gender in their everyday lives, including how they dress, walk, talk, etc. Transgender people and other gender non-conforming people face oppression based on their gender expression/identity.

The only pictures shown in the Daily News were of the more masculine-appearing women. One of the most despiciable headlines in the Daily News, “‘I’m a man!’ lesbian growled during fight,” (April 13) was targeted against Renata Hill, who was taunted by Buckle because of her masculinity.

Ironically, Johnson, who was singled out by the judge as the “ringleader,” is the more feminine of the four. According to the New York Times, in his sentencing remarks, “Justice McLaughlin scoffed at the assertion made by ... Johnson, that she carried a knife because she was just 4-foot-11 and 95 pounds, worked nights and lived in a dangerous neighborhood.” He quoted the nursery rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” (June 15)

All of the seven women knew and went to school with Sakia Gunn, a 19-year-old butch lesbian who was stabbed to death in Newark, N.J., in May 2003. Paralleling the present case, Gunn was out with three of her friends when a man made sexual advances to one of the women. When she replied that she was a lesbian and not interested, he attacked them. Gunn fought back and was stabbed to death.

“You can’t help but wonder that if Sakia Gunn had a weapon, would she be in jail right now?” Bran Fenner, a founding member and co-executive director of FIERCE, told Workers World. “If we don’t have the right to self-defense, how are we supposed to survive?”

National call to action

While racist killer cops continue to go without indictment and anti-immigrant paramilitary groups like the Minutemen are on the rise in the U.S., The Jersey Four sit behind bars for simply defending themselves against a bigot who attacked them in the Village.

Capitalism at its very core is a racist, sexist, anti-LGBT system, sanctioning state violence through cops, courts and its so-called laws. The case of the Jersey Four gives more legal precedence for bigoted violence to go unchallenged. The ruling class saw this case as a political one; FIERCE and other groups believe the entire progressive movement should as well.

Fenner said, “We are organizing in the hope that this wakes up all oppressed people and sparks a huge, broad campaign to demand freedom for the Jersey Four.”

FIERCE is asking for assistance for these young women, including pro-bono legal support, media contacts and writers, pen pals, financial support, and diverse organizational support. For details, visit www.fiercenyc.org.
We are two musicians, that create tension and flow between us by our sound and instrument choices, tube amp surfy goth rock guitar battling and making out with analog synth waveforms, bluesy organ keyboard collaborating with tweaked live played samples of self recorded obscure sources, low groans and high screaches co-exist with poisoned pop punk melodies and crooning cabaret dramatics. We need our third member, the drummer/percussionist, to hold down the beat, and explore with us. We call ourselves The Floating Corpses. We've been playing together for about 5 years, and both of us were in bands before this, one of us in rock n roll bands, the other in noise bands. We have recorded, toured, and get good gigs, have rehearsal space, etc. We work the underground scenes, not the mainstream; we are a serious band that lives for music, this isn't a hobby, but we arn't professionals per se, although we know how to be professional, we prefer to keep our punk ethics and keep having fun, but we are planning on touring the world.

You can find songs of ours on the web, but we have many sets of new songs that need to be fully brought to life with our new drummer. If you want to try out sometime, email us and tell us a bit about yourself. Check out some songs on www.myspace.com/thefreakmafia

Copyright KILLS music!!!

This is a FUCK YOU to the COPYRIGHT MAFIA sucking the FREEDOM OUT OF MUSIC!!!

How would you feel if people send you bills and demanded you paid, until you gave them proof that you don’t owe them anything? That is exactly how KODA (the Danish society administering copyright for public performance of music) operates.

We have chosen not to be members of KODA and NCB (Nordisk Copyright Bureau). They do tell me I won’t give up any rights to my music by submitting to them - only the right to administer it . But this means my music cannot be used by anyone without them putting money on the table. According to their rules I am not even allowed to quote parts of my my own lyrics on my own website without their permission.

The copyright societies make sure that music, art, and creativity CAN NOT BE EXCHANGED FREELY. Only as products in exchange for money. But even if we have chosen to work outside their system, KODA will still be charging venues for our music. They have told me that in order not to pay, we have to provide the proof that our music isn’t administered by them. Or (as they told me on the phone) I might as well submit to at least get the money they collect for my music.

I say FUCK THE COPYRIGHT MAFIA!!! I decide who can use my music and for what. No matter if they have money or not!!!

My best to everyone else

Nikolaj

PS: Here's the set list from our last show (as far as I remember)

Letter To Jane (Thank You Jean Luc Godard)
Smashing Cars (And People Who Charge For Art)
Mommy, Where Is Your Dildo? (I Miss Daddy Too)
(Let’s Do Drugs And Have) Deformed Babies
Action! Disco! (Fascism Begins With Pocket Money)
Don’t Expose Your Children To Capitalism (They Have The Right To Choose For Themselves)
God Never Gave Me a Cunt, But He Gave Me an Asshole

Queeruption Now Starting August 1st

With roughly 5 months to go, the Queeruption Vancouver organizing collective made the decision to extend Q10 by a day. Q10 will now run for a full week, from August 1st to August 7th.

Adding an extra day will give us all more time for workshops, discussions, performances, and actions. Also, we will have more time to get to know each other, make friends, etc.

Hopefully this won’t create a problem for anyone or disrupt travel plans too much. See you in August!

Hey Everybody,

The next meeting for the “As-of-yet-unnamed Post Queeruption DIY weekend in August” is coming up this Sunday. So far we have a good idea of the general outline of things, tentative dates being 17-19th of August. If anyone knows of possible conflicting events, please let us know. Come and give us some fresh views about possible bands, performers, and creative events we’re already thinking about.

Sunday the 11th @ Muddy Waters on 24th and Valencia, 5-5:30pm. Maybe a bit longer if need be.

From Ungdomshuset.dk:

Ungdomshuset is being evicted, we are now setting up infopoints to help activists with practical such as how to get around, where to sleep and find communal kitchens. The infopoints can be contacted on the following numbers: (+45) 26 90 75 07 and (+45) 26 90 75 08

PS. for news check out indymedia.dk og modkraft.dk
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's 25 years of alternative culture in Copenhagen driven out of it's home as if they were just rats... a place which has been central to the punk scene in Copenhagen and also housed some of the most radical queer parties in Copenhagen held by the group dunst (www.dunst.dk)... now the city has sold the house to a fundamentalist Christian group, under orders from which the police is now clearing the house. I have a feeling Copenhagen is not gonna be a quiet place in the weeks to come...

Meanwhile take a look at this music video by Blue Foundation shot at Ungdomshuset (the b/w stills are from the last efter Queer party in the house):

The Beaver Cafe for Queer Punks

Regular weekly queer punk events

The Beaver is growing up. This Queen West hipster-hang-out is slowing transitioning as new owners Will Munro and Lyn MacNeil attempt to infiltrate the gentrification migration taking over the kilometer stretch between Dovercourt and Dufferin. The pair officially took over the “Café” earlier this year and they are attempting to reinvent the space as more of a bar than an eatery, however they are still open for food throughout the day.

Munro is well known in the city for his events, particularly the infamous Vazaleen, now happening bi-annually at Lee’s Palace. He also is forever present at other social gatherings either as a DJ or artist, or both. MacNeil had managed Lee’s for several years recently, and prior to that had managed the legendary Danceteria in NYC. The two decided to collaborate on their first attempt at ownership, and the Beaver was reborn.

Slight renovations have taken place behind the bar and with the menu, but the limited size of the space inhibits any larger modifications. A half a dozen booths occupy the main level, with a few more scattered tables on the slightly elevated upper portion that leads to the somewhat covered patio at the back.

There’s a limited selection of beer, wine and spirits all priced within reason given the prestigious location sandwiched between the Gladstone and the Drake. The menu has remained relatively unchanged with reasonably priced dishes and quality ingredients, but with “added attention to preparation and presentation”, Munro remarks. The hours have been greatly expanded as they now open for breakfast at 9AM during the week, 10AM on weekends, and close at 2AM seven days a week.

The plans call for some interesting weekly and monthly themed events, including a rotating Punk night and Morrissey night on Monday, Shack Up on Thursdays and special events with guest DJ’s on weekends. Munro states they are “focusing on eclectic music for people who love music nights, with a good mix of queerness and the arts.” Bush Party and Space Rock are already happening, and other themes in the works are a weekly new-wave electro night, drag performances, movie nights, and a drawing and collage party with DJ’s. There’s also the possibly of some live performance showcases in the future.

A website is in development that will help to navigate the plethora of events. Let’s hear it for “The Beav” for their attempts to keep things fresh and different along this rapidly changing Drake-inspired strip of Queen Street.

Last year on the 4th of July I saw at least 3 American Flags
as I rode on the train, bus or riding in a friends car.

It seemed to me at least one person had it in mind to put up
flags. They all were the same size, on the same size wooden pole and
held on with what appeared to be white plastic fasteners.
It was hard for me to Not feel
Impressed.

I'd like to do some public art thing for the month of June.
Every one every where does a parade because well...
that's what they do in New York.
Hey,
They didn't write the Gay Rules.

I'm all about the "Enlightening."
I'm over the being "Naughty."
Stencil, T-Shirts, Public sculpture that appears over night,
Shows, Stickers, Silk screen posters,
zines, ....
Any other suggestions, questions, impresions, suggestions?

Favorite Shows

What are the three (or any number) punk shows you've been to that are your absolute favorites? These are the shows that you thank god (or the goddess ... or the devil ... or even your mom) everyday that you were lucky enough to attend.

Mine would be:

the Runaways 1978 (Huntington Beach, CA)
Edie Massey / Nervous Gender around 1982 (Hollywood, CA)
the Birthday Party / Lydia Lunch around 1981 (Hollywood, CA)

Queeruption Vancouver: August 2-7 2007!

This summer, Queeruption is heading to Vancouver Canada, on Coast Salish First Nations territory. We're calling this Queeruption Vancouver, but the bulk of the event is going to be held outside of the city in nature! By holding Q10 outside of the city we hope to make ecological and environmental concerns a focus at this gathering, and examine the intersections between radical queer activism and environmental activism.

As lots of you are aware, Queeruption is a DIY, non hierarchical, radical gathering for queers of all genders and sexualities. It usually happens in a different city around the world each year.

Queeruption works on the principal that everyone who attends has a part in creating the event! Therefore, if you have ideas on workshops, discussions, skill sharing, etc. email us about them! Likewise, if you're an artist, performer, film maker, band member, etc. and want to do something at Q10, email us too :) Hell, email us about anything.

Also:

1. Visit www.queeruption.org

2. Email us about anything and everything: q10vancouver@queeruption.org

3. Subscribe to the Queeruption Vancouver mailing list. Just send an email to majordomo@lists.queeruption.org with the words 'subscribe q10vancouver' in the body of the email.

See you in August!

Yes, we are serious, many, many of us are sick to death of the endless debate over the male only space of a certain Faery sanctuary in Oregon (WOLF CREEK!!!!). So we have decided to try and make one of our own. The link is : http://tribes.tribe.net/panhome. While all ideas and help is greatly appreciated and needed, there is one rule of this new tribe, *NO* mudslinging. No fights, or calling each other names..etc.. That is the one thing that will get your post deleted.

There is this thing in the wonderfull world of porn that bites like no other. It's that there is NO punk porn out there (there is, but I'll get to that), especially no GAY punk porn. Sure you can get the occasional german pig flick, but even then it's generally fetish related. And that's the problem with punks and goth types in porn. They only ever get cat for fetish roles. Producers and viewers alike see us in that light only. These people dress like freaks, therefore they get the freakiest roles in the industry. Sure it's a market, but is it all that we as punks and goth's want to see? Yes most of us own a selection of porn that is non-fetish related, but how much do we have that use "real" punks? Myself and a few others have been searching fo it, and have no results. Many people claim it's out there, but no one can bring any to the table. So in this we have decided to be the first co. to produce it. Our first production is going to be strictly a gay production. And because this will be the first film of it's kind, we want it to be exactly the style of film we as punks would want to see. Picture a "decline of the western civilization" overall feel, but with porn. Then add in a music video feel to it. Grainy, scratchy, and kind of in your face. That's the best way to describe what we are going after. Feel free to check out our myspace page as well. Click here, or copy and paste this link: www.myspace.com/conflictproductions . Right now we are seeking fresh talent and a fan base. We will have a website and trailer up soon as well. So myself (Ratt Bones), and Michelle Aston (porn star/dominatrix) have gotten together to bring you what the industry is lacking, and what punks want to see. So please add us on your myspace, and if your interested in helping us make this happen the right way, send us an email at: conflictproduction@gmail.com. Hopewe here from all of you!

Instigator Magazine Tribe

I've started a tribe on instigator Magazine. For those that haven't heard of it it's a fetish/bondage/gear/erotica/S&M magazine. It deals with more down to earth style not overly gearing towards the leather scene (not that it excludes leather). If you want to know more or want in just give me a shout on here or in private.

Gay Marriage: A question of Civil Rights

Gay Marriage: A question of Civil Rights

Statement of Peace and Freedom Party Senate Candidate Marsha Feinland:

In the United States, the institution of marriage controls our right to such matters as child custody, hospital visitation, and retirement income. It is also the most common and socially accepted form of a committed relationship between two adults. To deprive any couple of the right to marry is discrimination. We cannot allow discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, just as we no longer allow "miscegenation" laws to prohibit interracial marriage.

As the U.S. Senate takes up a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in time for preelection posturing by the right wing, we should study the poses assumed by the two senators from California. Both Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer were opposed to gay marriages in San Francisco when they were briefly legalized. This time, we will probably see them pointing out that the proposed amendment is "unnecessary," "inappropriate," or "not the business of the federal government."

My position is that a constitutional amendment or any law banning gay marriage is unjust, discriminatory and absolutely wrong. As long as the institution exists, everyone has the right to marry.

Porn and Identity Questions

I'm crossposting these questions from a friend of mine who is doing research on porn and feminism.

From Mel:
In Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture, Ariel Levy devotes a chapter to bois. Her conceptualization of and research on bois includes FTM and lesbians, but NOT men. She uses bois to illustrate that not only straight, young women but also lesbian bois are female chauvinist pigs (misogynistic, finding empowerment through mainstream porn ideologies and representations)>

How do you as a male boi, or as a queer, respond to this? How do male bois describe their identification, and how does it differ from lesbian bois? How do you feel about Levy's overall argument?
